Health and Living Conditions

The purpose of the Vårdal Foundation is to improve human health and living conditions. In order to achieve that purpose, the Foundation supports innovative research and strategic collaborations in those issue areas.

The Foundation is an independent financier of research, with a special focus on the challenges of ageing and health issues of children and adolescents. The Vårdal Foundation is one of the major players in Sweden for interdisciplinary research in the field of health and social care.
By collaborating with other financiers, the Foundation is able to achieve a greater impact of the financing effort, compared to what financiers can achieve on an individual basis.

Innovative Research and Collaborations

Supporting innovative research and initiating collaboration, the Foundation has launched several successful research programs, for instance Swedish Brain Power, a program that addresses cerebral disease and that has attracted much international attention.

Another example is the VINNVÅRD Research Program, which aims to generate knowledge and to speed up the process of putting knowledge into practice.

A Parliamentary Initiative

The Vårdal Foundation was established in 1994 upon a resolution by the Swedish Parliament. Since its inception, about SEK 850 million has been allocated in various kinds of research grants. The budgeted amount for financing research in 2010 amounts to SEK 60 million. Currently, the Foundation is supporting seven major research programs, each running over a period of four to eight years, and in one case even longer.
